Used Mercury Sables are vehicles that usually encounter malfunctioning of engine, fuel system, chassis, suspension and steering, ignition system, electrical and lighting systems, drivetrain and driveline, and other minor problems. But there are still used Sables that are in perfect condition, specialy those that are not so old models.

The Mercury Sable has transaxle instead of transmission. For the sedans and wagons the transaxle is 4-speed electronic automatic with overdrive and adaptive shift control. It is offering two kinds of engines, the OHV 12-valve Vulcan V6 and the DOHC 24-valve Duratec V6. Both engines have 3.0-liter displacement. The 12-valve V6 generates 153 horsepower at 5000 rpm and 186 pound-feet of torque at 3250 rpm, while the 24-valve V6 reaches 200 horsepower at 5500 rpm and a torque of 200 pound-feet at 4500 rpm. Fuel deliveries of the two engines are both sequential multi-port electronic fuel injection. The engine control is the EEC-V electronic engine control. If you have any plan of buying a Sable, it is more advisable to get a new one, instead of a used vehicle, although it will surely cost higher than the latter.
