The transmission is a component of the drivetrain in a rear wheel-drive vehicle, featuring internal gears. These gears makes the vehicle able to travel at different speeds when the engine s turning at the same rpm. There are two kinds of transmissions, the manual and automatic.

 

The manual transmission is requiring the driver to shift gears as needed, while the automatic transmission can upshift and downshift without input driven by the driver. However shifts in the automatic transmission should be in accordance with the prescribed parameters, but most of the gears can also be shifted manually. The performance of the automatic transmission can be enhanced through installing a shift kit. The Mercury Sable has transaxle instead of transmission. For the sedans and wagons the transaxle is 4-speed electronic automatic with overdrive and adaptive shift control.
